AAMI WAFL Premiership Season Semi-Final Preview
THE WAFL finals series kicks off on Sunday with a second semi-final battle that Claremont and Swan Districts have been preparing almost half a season for and a cut-throat first semi-final battle between East Fremantle and East Perth that should be a cracker. Claremont and Swan Districts separated themselves from the pack early in the 2010 campaign and were locked in to finish top-two fairly early on, and now play off for a grand final spot at Claremont Oval on Sunday. East Fremantle returns to finals action for the first time in eight years and East Perth the first time in three when they meet to book a preliminary final berth at East Fremantle Oval also on Sunday. |
First home final at Shark Park
THE East Fremantle Football Club League side has waited eight years, since 2002, to participate in a WAFL finals series but the wait is over and to make the occasion even more momentous the 1st Semi Final will be played at Shark Park in what will be the first home final that the club has ever hosted at the ground. In his third year at the helm, coach Shane Woewodin's hard work is starting to bear fruit. The League side was under pressure five weeks ago as they headed into a bye with four straight losses. Having dropped out of the final four with four games remaining and they needed to win all four remaining home and away games, starting with a home derby versus South Fremantle, to guarantee a spot in the final series. |
Sharks to make most of being back in finals
EAST Fremantle coach Shane Woewodin has put in five tough years since returning to the Sharks and now his hard work has been rewarded with a home final this Sunday and he hopes anyone that bleeds blue-and-white comes out to support them against East Perth. Woewodin, pictured, returned to East Fremantle in 2006 after a 200-game AFL career that saw him win a Brownlow Medal, Melbourne's fairest and best, represent Australia and WA along with playing in two grand finals. After two years of playing back at the Sharks and another two coaching coming into 2010, he had not taken part in finals action since the 2003 grand final loss for Collingwood, but now his personal and East Fremantle's (since 2002) finals drought is over. He also hopes all of the Sharks' faithful turns up to East Fremantle Oval on Sunday to show support against a firing East Perth unit. |

Sharks skipper Green wants to go out a winner
EAST Fremantle captain Kasey Green is in no doubt that the end of this season will be the right time to retire and hopes to end a terrific AFL and WAFL career by taking the Sharks' to the finals for the first time since 2002. Green returned to captain East Fremantle in 2008 upon the end of an AFL career that included 54 matches with the West Coast Eagles and 39 with North Melbourne, and has done the famous No. 2 jumper proud in 118 games with the Sharks since debuting back in 1999. Green's career has included a losing grand final with the Sharks and one with West Perth, so he knows all about playing on the big stage, and also has claimed a Lynn Medal, but he desperately wants to lead East Fremantle back to finals action. |
