AAMI WAFL Premiership season Semi-Finals
CLAREMONT asserted its dominance over Swan Districts to advance to the grand final with a win on Sunday while East Perth continued its amazing form to beat East Fremantle and qualify for the preliminary final. Claremont finished as minor premiers to earn a home second semi-final at Claremont Oval and took advantage beating Swan Districts 17.17 (119) to 10.9 (69) to move one step closer to a first premiership since 1996. East Perth has now won seven straight games after a disastrous start to 2010 and won a terrific contest with East Fremantle at East Fremantle Oval 15.12 (102) to 13.10 (88). That sets up what should be a cracking preliminary final at Steel Blue Oval between Swan Districts and East Perth as they vie for a grand final spot against Claremont. |
AAMI WAFL Premiership Season Semi-Final Preview
THE WAFL finals series kicks off on Sunday with a second semi-final battle that Claremont and Swan Districts have been preparing almost half a season for and a cut-throat first semi-final battle between East Fremantle and East Perth that should be a cracker. Claremont and Swan Districts separated themselves from the pack early in the 2010 campaign and were locked in to finish top-two fairly early on, and now play off for a grand final spot at Claremont Oval on Sunday. East Fremantle returns to finals action for the first time in eight years and East Perth the first time in three when they meet to book a preliminary final berth at East Fremantle Oval also on Sunday. |
Ledger claims Jack Clarke Medal
Claremont Colts midfielder Tom Ledger was honoured last night as the overall winner of the Colts fairest and best Jack Clarke Medal, which was presented during an AAMI WAFL Colts dinner presentation at Subiaco Oval. The agile, high endurance midfielder, who positions himself well and finds a lot of the football, polled 36 votes to win the award ahead of Peel Thunder’s Joel Beasley on 34 votes, and East Perth’s Ryan Maldenis and Swan’s Adam Faulkner on 33 votes each. Ledger, who also possesses quality decision making skills, is renowned for his terrific work ethic and is greatly respected and liked by his team mates. |
Royals want to make impact after stirring run
EAST Perth co-captain Michael Swan is pumped after the Royals' pulled off a massive finish to the season to make the finals but he knows that now they are there, there's no point not making a big impact. The Royals looked virtually no chance of making the finals for just the third time since the hat-trick of premierships between 2000-02, but turned it around after a disastrous 2-7 start to put a host of dramas behind them to win the last six games to finish in fourth spot. That will see East Perth travel to East Fremantle Oval to take on the Sharks in Sunday's first semi-final and it came after the Royals became just the second team all year to beat Claremont last Saturday at Medibank Stadium. |
Sharks to make most of being back in finals
EAST Fremantle coach Shane Woewodin has put in five tough years since returning to the Sharks and now his hard work has been rewarded with a home final this Sunday and he hopes anyone that bleeds blue-and-white comes out to support them against East Perth. Woewodin, pictured, returned to East Fremantle in 2006 after a 200-game AFL career that saw him win a Brownlow Medal, Melbourne's fairest and best, represent Australia and WA along with playing in two grand finals. After two years of playing back at the Sharks and another two coaching coming into 2010, he had not taken part in finals action since the 2003 grand final loss for Collingwood, but now his personal and East Fremantle's (since 2002) finals drought is over. He also hopes all of the Sharks' faithful turns up to East Fremantle Oval on Sunday to show support against a firing East Perth unit. |
AAMI WAFL Premiership season Round 23
EAST Perth continued its massive turnaround this season to beat Claremont on Saturday to book a finals berth as Subiaco, Swan Districts and West Perth also record final round WAFL victories. East Perth had to beat Claremont to make the finals and overcame some inaccurate kicking to do so with a 12.23 (95) to 11.13 (79) victory at Medibank Stadium. That made for a disappointing day for West Perth, who beat Perth 16.16 (112) to 14.3 (87), but missed out on finals with the Royals' win. Subiaco also beat South Fremantle 33.9 (207) to 21.18 (144) in a massively high scoring contest at Fremantle Oval and Swan Districts thrashed Peel 22.25 (157) to 7.5 (47). |
AAMI WAFL Premiership Season Round 23 Preview
EAST Perth and West Perth fight over fourth spot and a finals appearance in the last round of the WAFL on Saturday while last year's grand finalists do battle at Fremantle Oval and Swan Districts look to tune up for the second semi-final against Peel. East Perth currently holds fourth spot on the ladder and West Perth is fifth meaning that a Royals upset win over Claremont will guarantee them a finals appearance, however, a loss to the Tigers, who have lost just once this year, will open the door for the Falcons if they can beat Perth. The Royals will host Claremont at Medibank Stadium and the Falcons take on Perth at Arena Joondalup while South Fremantle plays Subiaco at Fremantle Oval and Swan Districts takes on Peel at Steel Blue Oval. |
Cowell now working on life after East Perth
BRENT Cowell's fondest football memories all came after he arrived at East Perth ahead of the 2001 WAFL season as he now looks to life after the Royals even if the boots haven't totally been packed away. Cowell retired after his 150th WAFL match following East Perth's Round 8 loss to Swan Districts, but left behind him a strong legacy as one of the best and toughest midfielders in the game over the last decade where he played in two premierships, won a fairest and best and represented WA. There's no doubt that Cowell found that the game continually changed and he felt it harder to keep up with the increased pace as the years went on, but right up until his final game he remained a prolific ball winner who could use the football well and set up his teammates. |
Round 23 WAFL broadcast changes
DUE to a late change in the West Australian Football League broadcast schedule, ABC TV will now cover this weekend’s East Perth versus Claremont game instead of the South Fremantle and Subiaco game. Sport FM will broadcast the South Fremantle versus Subiaco game. Other games remain as scheduled. |
Family success inspires McGrath all the way to 200
SOUTH Fremantle captain Toby McGrath has used his brothers as inspiration as he's watched them play AFL football, but his outstanding WAFL career has also spurred them on and now he adds 200 games to his career as an all-time great at the famous port club. While older brother Cory played 50 matches with Essendon and 28 with Carlton, and younger brother Ash is still an outstanding contributor to the Brisbane Lions having played 154 games including a premiership, Toby's career at South Fremantle is nothing to be sneezed at. McGrath made his debut back in 1998 and played in the 1999 and 2001 losing grand finals to West Perth and East Perth before being picked up by Essendon where he joined Cory. |
